STYLE: Icon Mr. Redford

Vintage Robert Redford

In the vintage biz it's easy to focus on all the female vintage icons, but I'm inspired by these photos of Robert Redford that I found in that Teen Style Magazine from 1971 I mentioned in this post on Fall Fashion. Since I'm preparing to release the men's section at the shop, I'm inspired by Redford's rustic, earthy 70's look. Of course I have had a crush on him for as long as I can remember, so i'm biased in using him as a source of inspiration. I just thought i would share... now my secret's out: i love rugged, can-barely-see-your-mouth-because-of-your-beard kind of looks :) Ry looked resembled this look during our treeplanting days and I loved it!! Vintage Robert Redford CollagePlease feel free to share your favourite vintage icons here or on my shop's facebook page over here! luv t.

Re-Claiming Personal Style: Fall Fashion

70's Fall Fashion
I've been working away at my style for a little while now. I have noticed it's changed a lot in the last couple of years and especially so in the last year. There are days when I don't want to give it any effort at all. I think I am particularly susceptible to this because I spend so much time focusing on styles for the Shop. I wrote about this struggle more over here, and about my process to re-claim my style. As women, it's very easy to leave the least amount of time for ourselves; you'll get the kids dressed and house clean before you'll spend time on yourself. For me you can just insert 'store' instead of kids - because having this shop feels like the closest thing to having offspring :)

Anyway, I'm tackling this frustration with planning, the same way I do in my work life. I begin with all sorts of images and bits of inspiration. Then, I go through what I already have and see what works. Then i make a list of items I would like to acquire. I think it makes a lot of sense to spend a good deal of time getting a good sense of what we like - otherwise we go out and just get things only to discover they don't 'fit' with the look we want. It's very easy to get swept up in what's 'in' rather than focus on what makes us feel good!

70's Fall Fashion
1970's Teen Magazine
I tend to sway more towards 70's fashions and love the bohemian/grungy look that can be attained with 70's fashions. A great way to gather inspration from any era is to collect magazines and catalogs from whatever era you are most attracted to. The first image is from a 1974 edition of Style, a Canadian Fashion Merchandizers magazine I got from Millpond Records and Books. The above magazine is a 1971 copy of Teen that I got in the mail from my fabulous sister. I also collect catalogs from the 70's.

Another great source of inspiration is through fashion icons. Some of mine are: Stevie Nicks, Emmylou Harris (check out this post and this one too) and Ali McGraw.

Lastly, Pinterest is a great place to find inspiration and make your own inspiration board. You can see my Fall Fashion inspiration board by going to Laloba Vintage's Pinterest account.

Please feel free to link up and show us your fall fashion inspirations!!

Happy Solstice (Yesterday)

Solstice Pic 4
Yesterday was Summer Solstice and it was the most perfect night weather-wise. After days of "blink-twice-and-break-out-in-an-intense-sweat" kind of weather, it finally broke and we had a full-on thunder storm last night. Afterwards the sky was all kinds of beautiful and I took this picture coming home from Hamilton last night. I played with the editing a bit - but not a whole lot... it really was that beautiful. I love the change of seasons and the celebration of transitioning into a new time. Years ago when we were living in Turkey, Ry and I hosted a rooftop Fall Equinox party and it is one of my most favourite memories. Do you have any traditions for celebrating Solstice or Equinox? luv t.

Screen Printing

Edwar Scissorhands Long TeeYou know when you go looking something up on the internet and you end up down the rabbit hole; one site leads to another, to another and then you end up in some really neat sites (hours later) and can't remember how you got there? Anyway, I have been interested in the art of screen printing for awhile, so I've been doing some research here and there. We have a really neat screen printing shop (and so very much more) in our town where my shop is called Spunturtle, which has only encouraged my interest. I love the idea of working through the process of designing the image to the full completion of a new garment. I have fallen in love with this Edward Scissorhands tunic (above) from the shop So You Think You can Rock. I'm adding this (and the Bowie one below) to my birthday list :)David Bowie Screenprinted Long TeeAnother really neat place I landed recently is Bonbi Forrest. I simply love the freshness of Lee May Foster's screenprint designs (not to mention her other works of art). Bigcatsteatowelspair

I'm making some freshening up changes around the kitchen soon and I love her new 'Big Cats' tea towels!!

If you have any other beloved screenprint artists, techniques, or other inspiration etc., please feel free to share :)

STYLE: Footwear for Every Part of the Day

Shoes for every Part of the Day
I'm not sure why but I have been taking photos of my feet for years and years (I could make a book of them really... that and i used to take pictures of toilets of every country or new place i visited, but that's another story). I have only recently discovered that this seems to be a thing, taking pictures of one's adorned feet. I thought it would be fun to track my footwear throughout the day.

Morning Selection: I hate having to sit and tie laces, so I have a lot of slip-on type shoes around. These skeleton -bling beauties are perfect for loading the car, quick errands and working around the house.

Afternoon Selection: Boots are another great slip-on item and i wear them almost every day. These particular boots are my favourite cowboy boots that have tassels on the back.

Nighttime Selection: Tried, tested and true moccasins. I thrifted these years ago and these babies have been inside, outside, treeplanting, to different countries and I take them anytime i sleepover somewhere. They are the first thing I put on when I get home at night (that is if i didn't leave them at the shop). They have become an extension of my feet and are the epitome of comfort.

Changeroom shot
and... a nice imperfect picture to end off with :)

Have pics of your lovely footwear? Feel free to share your link!
